Life doesn’t always present itself in the way we want, and that’s okay, we learn to adjust the sails to what life throws at us. As Jordan Dane once stated: “A journey takes time. And the lessons we learn best, they come from the journey, not the destination”. I aim to work with you on achieving that sense of self that best speaks to you. As a child born of two Salvadorians, I speak, read and write fluent Latin American Spanish, and can provide therapeutic services in both English and Spanish. I take joy in celebrating neurodiversity by affirming and uplifting the truth that our autistic, ADHD’r’s and highly sensitive people see the world differently and honoring that perspective means supporting their experience, rather than forcing our neurodivergent selves to conform to how everyone else operate within our predominant neurotypical world. At Kindred I’m also specializing in supporting children, teens, and adults navigate healing from trauma, anxiety, grief, depression, school and peer based stressors. As a Latina therapist I also provide specialized support for survivors of cultural and race based trauma. Our licensed therapists are trained to provide diagnosis over any psychological condition, to include PTSD, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive Compulsions, Adjustment related issues, and more. We also provide screening for Autism Spectrum, PANS/PANDAS. When necessary we may collaborate and refer our patients to trusted specialized practices to fulfill an in-depth neuropsychological evaluation. It's important to note that we take a depathologized approach to mental health, and when possible we assign the least pathologizing diagnosis. We understand that the intersection of mental health has many contributing factors, and work to address this by acknowledging the ways in which mental healthcare has been influenced by damaging deficit medical model narratives, as well as the colonization of mental health. Our healing work aims at decolonizing mental health, and focusing on ways in which we can affirm identities, and neuro-types. We tailor our services to be sensitive to neurodivergence, racial trauma, systemic oppressions, and the ways in which all of the above may create stressors in functioning in a neuro-typical world. In order to also provide deeper evaluation services catered to specific aspects of life, we offer the specific evaluations below:CLASSROOM EVALUATIONSIs your child struggling in the classroom setting? Book Appointment AYURVEDA Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. It's based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Through an Ayurvedic consultation with Vanessa you will receive a personal wellness and lifestyle plan that could include internal purification, special diet, herbal remedy suggestions, specific yoga routines, meditation practices, and an optimal daily life structure. The consults are meant to rebalance aspects of your life that are creating conditions in your health that create imbalance and dis-ease. Individuals seek Ayurvedic support when they are wanting to be intentional around their routines, diet, and wellbeing because they are struggling with sleep issues, excessive stress, anxiety, depression, or physical ailments like reflux, rashes, and pain, etc. Vanessa is a certified lifestyle and wellness Ayurvedic professional and an Ayurvedically minded psychotherapist. She actively practices an Ayurvedic lifestyle and has been supporting herself and clients for over 5 years in this ancient wisdom. Book Appointment REIKI Reiki is an alternative healing method that originated in Japan close to 3000 years ago. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word “Rei” which means "Universal Life" and “Ki” which means "Energy". Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Ideally, one’s "Ki" or energy should be strong and free flowing, nourishing and revitalizing the body and mind. By easing tension and stress that often blocks the natural flow of energy, Reiki assists the body in creating an environment that facilitates healing on all levels -- physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness although many studies have demonstrated the helpful benefits of reiki for treating trauma and stress. It is used to complement traditional medicine and is practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings. Sessions are very pleasant, soothing, and invigorating. You might experience a warming sensation or a tingling during a session, or nothing but sheer relaxation. Our Reiki sessions last for 60 minutes with time allotted to discuss any particular concerns you might have or health issues you might be experiencing. Book Appointment GENUINE AND CARING: Vanessa is an amazing reiki practitioner and reiki master. She builds rapport quickly with her clients and is so caring and kind. She also brings forth many other skills into her reiki that sets her apart as a healer. She expertly crafts customized oil blends and salves for the highest good of her clients. I respect her work and it has been an honor to mentor her along the way. I highly recommend any reiki class she teaches. I know that she is meant to do this work and share her gifts. -Barbara Davis, LCPC, RMTVanessa's reiki master mentor of 10 years REIKI TRAINING SCHEDULE Experience a rebirth into an authentic awakening of self-healing for your mind, body & soul. "Who looks outside dreams, who looks inside AWAKENS" - CARL JUNG Our Purpose Why The Name Kindred Tree? Trees reflect life, strength, and healing. A tribe of trees stand together, like kindred spirits, honoring themselves exactly for what they are. We are a well-regarded practice serving Virginia, Maryland, and D. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfil themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured. And every young farmboy knows that the hardest and noblest wood has the narrowest rings, that high on the mountains and in continuing danger the most indestructible, the strongest, the ideal trees grow. It's a time to enjoy the beautiful blooms, and the warming weather. Yet, seasonal transitions also tend to bring forth stress. Change is not always easy. Spring blooms also exacerbate allergies and no one enjoys those! We've previously written about finding ways to "vibe" with spring, and you can find that article here. Deepening into ways to be in rythem with the season is a positive thing for our mental health. Our latest podcast episode, " Ease into Spring: An Ayurvedic Approach To The Season of Re-birth" offers deeper insights into making a mindful transition to spring. In this episode we share that we can further support our physical bodies in spring by using certain ingredients. In Ayurveda, spring is coined the season of "Kapha", the element of water. The foods we eat is one easy way to balance the excess Kapha in the air. Give the recipes below a try, and let us know how this worked for you! The recipes below will help fight allergies, lower inflammation, and soothe the digestive issues that may arise during Spring. As always, please don't consume anything you are allergic to, and consult your doctor if you have a medical condition that could react negatively to the below ingredients. Turmeric Honey (Add some turmeric powder into your honey jar, and mix well, enjoy this all season long! ) Golden Milk Latte with Ghee (excellent in the evenings as a way to prepare your body for deep rest and inflammation support) 1) Warm 1 cup of your preferred milk over the stove in a pan 2) Add 2 teaspoons of powdered turmeric or your favorite powdered turmeric milk mix 3) Add 1 tsp of ghee (I love to buy my ghee from here, and enjoy the vanilla bean ghee they have) 4) Stir with an electric milk frother, and top your latte with cardamom and cinnamon! Stinging Nettles! (Forage them wild, wash and cook them and add to salads, or steep in boiling water as tea, or checkout the delicious soup recipe below) Spring Stinging Nettle Soup Ingredients  1-2 Cloves of Garlic Spring Onion (not green onions y'all) 2-3 Parsnips 1 quart of Homemade Bone Broth (can sub this with vegetable broth) A few big handfuls of fresh Stinging Nettles Juice of a Whole Lemon 1/2 cup of Chopped Parsley 1 Bay Leaf Salt & Pepper to taste Olive Oil Chives (for garnish) Instructions In a medium-sized pot heat 1 tbsp of olive oil, add chopped garlic and onions and cook for about 5 minutes while stirring frequently. After 5 minutes, add chopped parsnips, parsley, the bay leaf, and your choice of liquid. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer and cover for about 10-15 minutes until the parsnips soften. As the soup is cooking, begin prepping your nettles. For starters, put on some gloves – don’t skip this step! Carefully pick the nettle leaves from the stems and wash them thoroughly. Once the parsnips are soft add nettles to the pot and cook for 2 more minutes. Remove from the heat. Fish out your bay leaf and add lemon juice and salt + pepper to taste. Add soup contents to your blender or use an immersion blender and blend until smooth. Serve garnished with freshly chopped chives. Enjoy! Eat mindfully and notice how your mind and body feel after consuming this nourishing soup! *Has all this seasonal Ayurveda and plant medicine information peaked your interest? In other words, our children need us to have the ability to remain emotionally regulated during moments where we ourselves are experiencing stress. Parenting in these modern times is incredibly demanding and it can easily leave us chronically overwhelmed, exhausted, and agitated. A recent study from the American Psychological Association confirms this. In the Stress in America survey in 2017, for the first time in 10 years, the overall stress in Americans increased. Though this study did not examine parenting stress in particular, it’s important to understand that overall adult stress does impact caregivers and their parenting. According to this survey, a growing number of adults report that stress impacts their physical and mental health. This trickles down in many ways, for example 33% of adults report changes in sleeping habits, 32% report headaches and 27% report an inability to concentrate due to stress. Furthermore, stress impacts our relationships and even our children; 47% of adults report losing patience with or yelling at their partner, and 46% report similar behavior with their children because of stress. Being an adult is hectic enough, and being a parent increases our stress as well. Parenting stress is a normal part of the caregiving experience. It arises when parenting demands exceed the expected and actual resources available to the parents that permit them to succeed in the child-rearing role. Research has found that high levels of parenting stress impair warm responsive parenting and provoke harsh reactive caregiving. It also negatively influences the parent-child relationship, and it is predictive of negative social-emotional and cognitive outcomes for children and adolescents. These outcomes contradict the hopes most parents have for their kids. As parents, we hope our kids can be resilient in the face of adversity, and cope thru difficult circumstances so that they can experience greater success in life. So, it’s time to check ourselves. What are we doing in our present life to model this type of resilience for our children? In my experience as a mother, and psychotherapist specializing in parenting, trauma, and anxiety, I could give hundreds of ways to help you shift into a healthier way of handling parenting stress. But, if I could narrow it down to three life changing habits it would be these three: Self-care We simply cannot pour from an empty cup. If parenting stress results from demands exceeding resources, then we need to increase our inner resources. We can do this by practicing caring for ourselves. Finding ways to fill our cup. This does not have to mean scheduling a vacation to the Caribbean. There is many small ways where we can practice self-care in our daily life. It could mean a few minutes of quiet in the morning, a walk in nature, an exercise routine, and even a good cry in the shower. Self-care works the best when we do it with the intention of releasing anything that has been toxic to our nervous systems. Think of activities along the lines of: Journaling. Creative expression. Movement. Nature. Laughter. Increase Self-Reflection and Make Hard Decisions Take time to self-reflect on how you’re doing, what you’re struggling with, and what triggers you the most about being a caregiver. What are your kids doing that drives you crazy? Fills you with anger? Makes you blow up? Self-reflect on these things and be curious. And then take action. What is contributing to your inability to self-regulate in these moments? Is it because their actions coupled with daily demands are too much for you to process? Is it because you are over-scheduled? Is parenting bringing up old childhood wounds or other traumas? Often times, self-reflection leads to hard decisions; removing activities, things, or people, that are not helping you cope in the healthiest of ways. The point of self-reflection is to shift from being on auto-pilot to a state of mind that is more conscious. Reach out for Support As humans, we are not wired to exist in isolation. We are social creatures wired for relationships. If you are struggling as a parent, it’s time to build that village. It really does take a village to raise our children. And here is where the golden nugget lies; be choosy about who is a part of your village. Pick people that have the strengths you don’t have. Pick people who love being parents and part of support systems, who are resilient, and emotionally connected with themselves. Why? Because if you are struggling with these very same issues, then they can be a source of healthy support. The cliché term, “misery loves company” is true; so fighting the unconscious urge to be attracted to people that mirror our darkness is important. We can create a healthy village by challenging ourselves to be around people that are mirroring light-even if it makes you feel so uncomfortable and insecure at first. Doing our own emotional and psychological self-growth as a parent is also vital. Seek the support of a good therapist if it feels like despite all your best efforts, you are still struggling. The positive domino effect of this will also make you a better human to those that struggle, especially your children. Above all things, remember, the point is not about being the perfect parent who lives a life of no stress. The suggested habits above seem so simple, but are perhaps, some of the hardest habits to carry on and be consistent with. And they will change your life for the better. Don’t give up, even when your life continues to feel full of overwhelming emotions. It’s impossible to live a problem free life. Virginia Satir, a renowned family therapist said “Problems are not the problem; coping is the problem”. So, buckle up, and get coping with this beautiful, complex thing called parenthood and life. It’s how... --- - Published: 2024-03-16 - Modified: 2024-03-16 - URL: https://kindredtreehealing.com/conscious-new-year-familygoals/ - Categories: All Posts How to consciously step into the new year with #familygoals By Vanessa Durrant, MSW, LCSW-C, RMT, RYT 2017 is a wrap and we now enter a new year with infinite potential! The energy of a new year is a great time to slow down, reflect, and gather your thoughts for how you want to live in the new calendar year. Don’t step into a new year on auto-pilot, it will not yield the results you deeply yearn for. Whether we are single-parenting, step-parenting, or blending families- we all want to feel connected, secure, and joyful in our relationships. Yet-happy families don’t justhappen. They are a product of hard, conscious, work. And one way to get there is by using the new year to make a specific family goal/intention together. This process will help forge more purposeful relationships, unify, and increase family connection. Goal setting is an intentional process, and being organized, and inclusive of all family members, will help create goals that will have a positive impact in the home. Sometimes, coming up with a way to get everyone’s input can be overwhelming. Below are 12 tips for making a family goal that will stick throughout the new year. 1)Schedule a family meeting Make it fun and include scrumptious snacks everyone can enjoy. Whether you have little ones or teenagers, make everyone aware that the family meeting will be about coming up with a new family goal together. Exude positive and open energy, and your kids will mirror that right back. 2)Stay focused Again, this is a time to set family goals. Don’t use this as a time to air out family grievances, or use behavior issues as the reason for a goal. It will draw out the fun and create unhealthiness. Focus your insights and feedback in a positive way rather than thru negative feedback or language. 3)Involve everyone during brainstorm time Seeking feedback and suggestions from everyone will help create individual investment. When someone invests into a goal, they are more likely to stay motivated in following it thru. Whether you have teens, or preschoolers, everyone should have a voice at the table. Make an effort to write everyone’s ideas down on a board for everyone to see. 4)Select the favorite ideas and go thru pro’s & con’s Tally up the votes for the top 3 ideas and go thru the pro’s and con’s for each goal to help you nail down the one that feels the most feasible to carry out as a family 5)Be realistic and clear Once you select a goal, make sure to hear everyone’s input as to whether they understand the nature of the goal and whether they can feel committed to reaching it. 6) Make it measurable and break it down If your goal revolves around a fun trip, break down what you will need to make it happen, like money, location, and timeline. 7) Make a goal schedule This is part of creating a deadline for your goal. Ideally, you want these goals to carry you throughout the year. So, break it up into pieces every month, and outline a way to make steady progress. Mapping out a step-by-step action plan will help provide structure and the actions needed to stay invested. 8) Sprinkle in inspiration and motivation Be mindful to talk about what will continue to inspire you to reach the goal, do you need mini-family check in meetings? Half-way mark rewards? A plan if you feel stuck? 9)Surround yourself with support Whether that be books, friends, organizations-anything positive that will encourage your progress with your goal. If your goal is to be more out in nature, get connected with your local nature center, or look for books at the library that revolve around nature. 10)Visualize your family reaching the goal Life is about the energy you devote to things. Create a family collage visual that can be hung somewhere visible. Cut out images from magazines that show completion of the goal. If your goal is about being more outdoorsy, select image that showcase a family enjoying the outdoors, with words that also help depict the joy of being outdoors. The more that the entire family can visualize success, the more likely people will stay invested in manifesting the goal. 11)Adjust accordingly If anyone voices concern or doubt over a portion of the goal, gather everyone up, provide the appropriate support and don’t be hesitant in adjusting a goal to make it reachable! Flexibility is a great skill to model to your kids. 12) Delight, love, and celebrate! You have reached your goal or halfway mark. Praise the effort everyone put in and celebrate in a way that feels cheerful and authentic! Always remember that the journey is more important than the destination. Slow down and notice what the process of achieving goals is teaching you and relay this to your kids. Let it spark a two-way conversation. In setting a yearly family intention, you are actually modeling something much bigger to your children. You are showing them that looking inward, and working outward towards something positive is possible, and that staying motivated, flexible, slow and steady, does win the race! This day is also known as the vernal (or spring) equinox. It has been the day designated as the start of spring and end of winter. The days will get longer and the nights will get shorter until summer solstice time on June 21. Essentially, this means, more time outdoors! This vernal equinox is a great time to manifest positive growth and shifts into a new season of being. It is a time to be inspired and act on your inspirations. The change in seasons has long been celebrated with certain traditions by cultures around the world. During this time, the northern hemisphere will get more light, making the day longer, because the earth will tilt towards the sun. This rhythm in nature tells me it's a good time to be led by Earths own inspiration. We can use this as a time to lean in towards the sun; metaphorically speaking. Leaning towards the sun means embracing the light within you, and the light of others. In modern times, use of our light helps us feel connected, nurtured, loved, and inspired. There are 3 simple, yet powerful ways to do this: Connect with Nature and Others Spend time with friends you enjoy seeing. Even if it's been a long time. Reach out and make sure that you plan something that embraces the season. Anything outdoors will do. Bask in the gift that friendship is. As you spend time with those that cherish and support you, you will also feel connected and nurtured by this change in season. It may even create deeper meaning in your life. Existing within the context of community with others will help you make connections that may even self-propel some of your own goals or purpose. Bring Spring Inside Is the energy in your house or office feeling stale? Do you spend a lot of time in these spaces? Then it's time to bring in some green into your home and office. Planting seeds and placing them in the sun, and giving plenty of water will literally bring spring into those spaces. This will manifest into new and positive energy and can have a nice effect on your mood while you are home or at work. If you don't have a green thumb, visit your local nursery and ask for plants that thrive easily, without much care. Don't underestimate the positive impact a little green can do for you. It will have a domino effect on those around you too. Plant indoor plants that will also nourish you, like herbs, and the impact will be two-fold. Invest Energy Into a Passion or Hobby This season is essentially a time for rebirth and the sprouting of new things. Make sure that you dedicate time and energy every week into a passion or hobby. This will revitalize you and in turn it will help you show up stronger to those around you. As you invest energy into something you love, you are also investing in self-love, the most powerful of loves. This is what helps you shine from within. This will have a double impact if your passion or hobbies involve nature. Remember, investing energy into a passion or hobby does not need to cost money. Be creative if you are tight on funds. The catch to incorporating any of these 3 tips is doing them with intention. Couple your activity with the goal of it helping you to feel more balanced and harmonized. What you will notice, is that as you create space for these things, you will be invigorated with new connections, purpose, and light. Practice these 3 tips, not just once, but over and over throughout Spring. This will prepare you to enter into the next season with strength, fortitude, and community! --- - Published: 2024-03-16 - Modified: 2024-03-16 - URL: https://kindredtreehealing.com/the-power-of-play/ - Categories: All Posts By Vanessa Durrant, MSW, LCSW-C, RMT As parents, sometimes we are perplexed by our children's play. What does it mean? Are they playing too much, not enough, too rough? These are important questions as they help us to elevate the importance of childhood. Much research has validated the significance of play and this article will help you understand your role in understanding and supporting different kinds of play. Children need play in their lives in order to healthfully grow, express, and understand their world. The brain will not healthfully develop without it. It begins in infancy when a baby moves its body. These random movements that have no seeming purpose are actually the building blocks known as unoccupied play. As a child continues to grow, play actually changes the connections of the neurons in the front of their brain known as the prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain that is not finished developing until the mid-twenties. This part of the brain allows for executive functioning to develop. Executive functioning helps with planning, completing tasks, solving problems and even regulating emotions. In essence, play helps prepare the child for school, friendships, and careers–for life. Social play, however, builds over time via different stages. After unoccupied play, comes solitary, onlooker, cooperative, associative, and then finally, parallel play. Because of this natural progression, scientists are also purporting that the larger purpose is to build pro-social brains that know how to interact with others in positive ways. That is powerful! For these reasons, play has deeply therapeutic effects on children, too. Since children often lack the complete brain development that allows for sophisticated language and emotional expression, play is able to symbolize language. Sometimes, it is easy to discount play as a given, something that is merely a part of childhood, without realizing that play is the universal language of childhood. And thus, our children are able to communicate with us in this way. As parents, it's helpful to understand play in order to best comprehend and support our children. First let's learn the six categories of play: 1. Constructive – building and creating, supports visual-spatial, fine motor, and math skills 2. Physical – movement based, supports muscle development, healthy exercise, and coordination 3. Expressive – expressing feelings through art, music, and writing, it’s vital for creativity 4. Competitive – learning about fairness, rules, and taking turns 5. Fantasy – imagining and thinking beyond their world, aids creative problem solving 6. Digital – a pseudo-type of solitary play, without social interaction, impacts social skills like eye contact and attention So in reading about those six categories of play, some may jump out as, "Ah, yes, my child does that all the time," while also noticing that your child may not engage in other certain kinds of play. This is especially true if your child has a learning difference or is on the spectrum. If this is the case with your family, with creativity, time and effort, you can actually slowly support your child into more types of play, and thus positively impact their social skills development. Additionally, within each of those categories is a large spectrum of what that play may look like and what a child is really expressing via that play. This is why it's vital that parents become attuned to their child when they are playing because by doing so, you can help your child feel understood and supported. As a parent, this is a skill that takes time and effort to hone, so be patient with yourself. Often times, parents may find it difficult to play with their children. It can be as simple as feeling confused because your child is asking you to play with them, yet, the minute you begin to play, they are so involved in what they are doing, it's as if you are not there, or in other instances, because you feel frustrated by the play they are exhibiting, are they being too physical or aggressive? Just crashing all the toys together? Or other times, you just frankly don't want to play what they want to play. It's so important in these moments to remember that all of this play is telling you something, about them, and even yourself. A child who asks to play with you, then gets so involved in their own play, may just be communicating that they want to feel your presence; they want you there, to delight in them, to witness their world. They have not necessarily mastered other stages of play like cooperative, associative or parallel play. And that is okay. Your mere presence is allowing for that to slowly develop. Additionally, a child who is too physical or aggressive may need an outlet to safely express pent up emotions and thoughts or just simply release energy. You can be that safe person by playfully playing back, letting them take the lead and once that child feels understood, you will see that play naturally de-escalates into calmer play. If you don't notice a de-escalation after you have thoroughly played, you can take the lead and say, "Ah, I'm having so much fun letting all my energy out with you that now my body is feeling tired. Let’s take a break or go color together. Which would you prefer? " It's important to verbalize what is happening because you are also helping your child connect the play experience with his feelings and body. One of the most important things to remember when you are playing with your child is to allow them to take and keep the lead. Do not judge or interfere with what they are bringing to the table. This literally takes their power and voice away. For example, if you are playing with dinosaurs on the floor, do not attack their dinosaur. This conveys your dominance to the child. Instead, let them take the lead. If they attack your dinosaur, let it happen. If you feel confused by what to do next, ask them! You will... --- - Published: 2024-03-16 - Modified: 2024-03-16 - URL: https://kindredtreehealing.com/positive-parenting-for-the-child-who-is-struggling/ - Categories: All Posts Positive Parenting for the Child Who is Struggling By Vanessa Durrant, MSW, LCSW-C, RMT Parenthood—it’s special, sacred, and a journey for sure! One moment you are on your biggest high from having the most tender moment with your child and the next you are on your lowest low, wondering if being a parent is really for you. As a parent myself, I know those highs and lows. Things can feel particularly challenging when you are finding it hard to parent a child who may be struggling. There are many parenting strategies out there and it can be overwhelming to choose strategies that are right for your family. Yet, one of the most important things in raising children is to parent according to your child's needs. Research has proven time and time again, that children are happiest when they feel understood. As humans, we all have needs that we need to be met in order to feel our best and most productive selves. The same applies to children. Positive parenting is one such approach that can help us support our children in times of need. As the name suggests, positive parenting aims at facilitating the positive to combat the negative. It's an approach that you embody where you recognize the best in your child in order to help their growth and development. So when your child is struggling by way of fits, angry words, or grumpy moods, you are able to separate those moments as moments, and not your child being a "bad child. " Instead, it is your child communicating that they are not ok and a positive connection can help you help them. Thus, when you need to correct your child for their negative behavior, like hitting or saying hurtful things, you can enact discipline. A positive parent disciplines, they do not punish. There is a big difference between punishing behavior and disciplining. Positive discipline teaches and guides a child into learning from their mistakes and wrong doings. Punishment is based on enacting control and retribution for a child's bad behavior. For example, your child just hit their brother, and you are upset and believe he must be punished for this, so you tell them that they can't play on the iPad for the rest of the week. You know they enjoy their iPad time and so you get back at them where you know it hurts, by taking it away for a week. In your mind, now he knows he can't go around hitting others when he's upset. But if you stop and pause, has he actually learned that it's not okay to hit? And how that hurts another's body and feelings? And if he is upset at them, how to communicate that in a better way instead? No, they haven’t learned these essential life skills. Instead, they know that hitting their brother means something will be taken away. And most likely you will have other similar misbehaviors come up that will warrant more punishment, and you are stuck in a cycle of taking things away and before you know it, you are so disconnected from one another that you don't know what else to do to get them to behave better. Punishment can also instill fear in a child and that is a slippery slope when, in reality, you just want them to learn to do better. In fact, research on moral development actually found that children who feared punishment tended to have less guilt, were less willing to accept responsibility, were less resistant to temptation and had fewer internal controls than children who were not punished. A reason for this is because punishment is all about the parent having control over a child and their behavior, rather than helping your child develop control over their own behavior. And that's exactly what positive discipline aims to do. Some people think that positive discipline means you are permissive when a child does things like hitting a sibling. But the opposite is true. In the situation above, a positive parent would step in and through positive language communicate that hitting is unacceptable. One way to do this is,"Hey, we only use kind touches in our family. We won't hit others when we're angry. Let's figure out what's wrong together. " This will allow your child to know what is expected of him—kind touches, not hitting. Furthermore, it will allow time to problem solve with them regarding what made them so upset that they felt they had to hit in order to communicate those feelings. After they are calm and this can be done, you would reinforce kindness by asking your child to do something that is kind for his brother who he hit. In all of this, your child is learning many skills to develop successfully into an adult. They are learning about feelings, communication, coping, empathy, and kindness. Most importantly, they are learning that with your support, they can correct their mistakes and count on you for help. With practice and consistency, you will find that misbehaviors lessen, because you are more in tune with your child, and they know they can come to you when they are beginning to struggle. There are endless ways to employ positive parenting and positive discipline, so it can feel overwhelming at first. Below are my top four recommendations to begin embodying a positive parenting perspective: 1) Replace time-outs with time-ins Instead of sending your child to their room when they are very upset or have done something wrong, stay close to them, let them know you are there for them, and when they feel calmer, you can figure out a way to feel better and do better. You can hold them on your lap as they cry and let their sadness out, or if they are aversive to comfort, place yourself on the floor, and slowly watch as you inch closer to each other, and be ready for that big hug where they can feel that you really will figure it... --- - Published: 2024-03-16 - Modified: 2025-04-02 - URL: https://kindredtreehealing.com/the-importance-of-delighting-in-our-children/ - Categories: All Posts The Importance of Delighting in Our Children By Vanessa Durrant, MSW, LCSW-C, RMT One of my most poignant memories as a child was when I was about two or three years old. I was dancing and singing along to a song and my family was circled around me. They were like giants to little baby me. And, as I looked up, I saw indescribable joy and happiness. I felt it. My mom and her sisters, my sweet aunts, were all gathered around me, delighting in me. As little as I was, their delight in me had a profound effect. I still remember today how I felt in that moment. I felt special. I felt like I was the most extraordinary singer and dancer in the universe. The joy in their faces, as I looked up, told me so. I loved that they loved watching me dance. In fact, it was infectious; I danced and so did they. At least, that’s how it felt for me. You see, in the hustle and bustle of raising children, we often forget such a critical piece, to delight in them. As parents, we often come to realize how to provide stability, routine and safety to our children. Children do need all these things. But they are only part of the equation in raising children who are securely attached. Why would we want a child who is securely attached? Research in the field of attachment and developmental science has continually found that children who have secure and healthy relationships with their caregivers go on to have happier and healthier relationships in life, higher self-esteem, and experience less depression and anxiety. So how do we do this, and what does it mean? It means consistently being there for them as best you can. And, at times, they need us to be there for them in different ways. Attachment research has found that children (and adults) have core needs that must be met most of the time in order to develop secure relationships with their caregivers. One of those core needs, and perhaps the most important one, is delight. But what does it mean to delight in our kids? Sometimes we confuse delight with achievement. For example, they play baseball, they hit a home run, and at the end of the game we say, “Good job today! That home run was awesome! ” Sure, you’re happy for them, they won, they performed well and are getting better at baseball. And while there is nothing wrong in communicating our enjoyment with their performance, that is not the same thing as delighting in them, which is even more important. Delight in our children does not have any strings attached. Delight in our children is enjoying them during the game, regardless of the outcome. It’s staring at them and finding joy that they get to play. That also feels different to communicate. It reflects as, “Hey, I just loved watching you play! I loved seeing you with your team. ” On the receiving end, that also feels different because the focus was not on achievement, but instead, it communicated to your child, “I watched you play, and I loved it. ” Delight can be shown non-verbally, too. Children see it in your smile, your laughter, or your hug. Your eyes can’t hide delight, and your child will feel your joy. Essentially, delighting in your children is exactly that, having happiness and appreciation for who they are. This, in turn, turns into joy in the relationship. In fact, the example above is not unique to our kids. In an article I read a few years ago, a journalist who interviewed professional athletes found a theme when asking about the role their parents played in their success. These athletes shared that what was most encouraging was not, “great shot” or “try harder next time,” but instead it was, “I loved to watch you play. ” Delight in our kids goes a long way. It lasts a lifetime. It fills their soul. Children are born yearning relationship and joy. This is the very same thing that helps their growth and development and it’s been an area of study for neuroscientists. Researchers studying the brains of babies found that mutual joy between caregiver and infant was the basis for increased brain growth. We all want that for our kids, right? Yet, life, and even our own histories, get in the way, and sometimes it just sucks the joy right out. The thing about raising children is, that often times, it is our children who teach us how we must grow and evolve in order to be better humans, and parents to them. Sometimes delighting in our children is hard because we are experiencing our own depression, anxiety, or even plagued with our own painful childhood memories. If that is the case, it’s a sign that you may need some support so that it does not impact your children. As a parent, you are in control of how you can help yourself and your kids. Raising children is hard, and sometimes we need to hear that in order to grant ourselves permission to seek more support. The daily routines, the pressures of school work, other people’s opinions of our kids, our own life stress—all those things can make it hard to delight in our kids. Trust me, I know this. I, like the many parents I have worked with, have also felt this at times. Yet, it’s not an excuse to forget to delight in our kids. Years ago, I learned something profound. Delighting in our kids is about communicating, “I love you and I like you regardless of what you do or don’t do. ” My best advice, when life gets busy and stressful and you find delight hard to do, is to take a pause. Stop. Breathe. Stare at the wonderful creature in front of you. Look into his eyes. Remember what you want to fill his spirit with. Remember that, above all... --- - Published: 2024-03-14 - Modified: 2024-03-16 - URL: https://kindredtreehealing.com/living-intentionally-in-the-summer-months-ayurveda-to-the-rescue/ - Categories: All Posts Have you caught yourself experiencing those hot fiery emotions this summer?
